Salem's Top Spellers

The Salem School Board congratulated this year’s Spelling Bee winners at Tuesday night’s meeting. Andrew Lewis Middle School student Maya Makked, was the Division’s overall winner for the third straight year. Maya is a 8th grader at ALMS where she is taught by Meghan All.
She was crowned City Champion on February 18 following nine rounds of competition. Maya competed against the spelling bee champions from East Salem Elementary, South Salem Elementary, G.W. Carver Elementary, and West Salem Elementary. The board also honored Laci Barnes, a 5th grader at West Salem, who was the Division runner-up.
Maya represented the Salem City School Division in the Roanoke Times Spelling Bee on Saturday, March 11.
The individual Spelling Bee Champions and alternates from each school are as follows with the champions listed first.
