The music room is located in the Kindergarten wing of the school and is well equipped with elementary music materials including many melodic instruments and rhythm instruments.
The elementary music program is taught by one part-time music specialist who instructs students two and a half days each week. Each student receives one half hour of music instruction weekly.
It is important to emphasize that educational growth in music is a step-building process. The objectives listed for each grade level may not be accomplished fully that year. The teacher, as the evaluator, must continually observe and assess the objectives learned and the objectives needing further attention.
This curriculum is based on five areas: Singing, Listening, Playing instruments, Rhythm, and Theory.
The Music Program strives to
- Provide all students the opportunity to sing.
- Provide all students the opportunity to perform on some type of musical instrument.
- Provide all students active listening experiences
- Provide all students an opportunity to participate in the creative aspect of music
- Acquaint the student with the language of music
- Relate music to other subject areas
- Provide all students the opportunity to perform music
- Stimulate an appreciation and understanding of our nation's music and the music of other nations
These goals should enable each student to develop his musical interests, knowledge, and abilities.
The textbooks used in the music instruction program are The Music Connection Series by
Silver Burdett Ginn, 1995 edition. These textbooks correlate to the National Standards for Music Education established in 1994 by the Music Educators National Conference.
