Fifth Grade SOL's
Links for Fifth Graders
West Salem's Fifth Grade consists of 3 classes of approximately 20 students each. Students are taught in a departmentalized structure with Mrs. Oster teaching science and writing, Mrs. Nimmo teaching reading and English, and Mrs. Trumbower teaching social studies and spelling. Students are taught math and handwriting in their homerooms.
Students have resource areas daily which include 50 minutes of music once every other week, 50 minutes of art once every other week, 30 minutes of gym twice weekly, library visits weekly 30 minutes once every four days . A daily recess of 10-15 minutes. They also have guidance lessons based on the pillars of Character Counts each six weeks. The DARE officer visits fifth grade classrooms on a once every other week basis also.
Fifth graders frequently have additional responsibilities including safety patrols, SCA officers, raising and lowering the flag, and computer lab assistants.
The goals of fifth grade include:
- To provide a positive environment for learning
- To help students to develop study skills
- To help students to develop lifelong organizational skills
- To prepare each student for the middle school experience
- To foster self-discipline and independence in each student
- To provide an environment conducive to self-expression and creativity
- To provide a level of computer literacy in each student
- To provide a curriculum which is guided by the Standards of Learning but exceeds these standards when appropriate
