West Salem's Third Grade consists of 3 classes of approximately 22 or 23 students each. Students are taught in self-contained classrooms for language arts. They departmentalize for science, social studies, and math. Mrs. Buchholz teaches science, Mrs. Dishaw teaches Social Studies, and Ms. Mahan teaches math.

Students have resource areas daily which include 30 minutes of music, art, guidance, library, PE, and Classroom PE (CRPE) depending on the day of the Encore schedule. They also have a 45 minute block of computer lab time during Encore time, as well. The DARE officer visits third grade classrooms on a once every other week basis during one month.

The third grade program strives

  • To provide the students with a nuturing environment that promotes learning.
  • To meet each child's individual educational needs.
  • To help the students transition from primary grades to upper elementary grades where more independence, organization, and studying are required.
  • To prepare students for their first Virginia SOL tests in the four core subject areas.
  • To provide time for independent reading and encourage the students to read chapter books.
